The year was 1986.
The hair was enormous.
The teeth had braces.
The boobs were (are) as flat as a board.
I was a 7th Grader.
I knew everything about everything, and I was SURE my parents were out to make me as miserable as humanly possible.
Ah, those were the days...
Like all kids in 7th grade, I had awesome taste in music, and my favorite song of the year was this classic little ditty:

Walk Like An Egyptian by the BANGLES!!!!
I taped the video on MTV and would play it over and over...
I would sing all the Susanna Hoffs parts because she was the coolest one in the group and why would I sing any other part but the BEST one, right???
Thinking back on it now, I have NO idea what the lyrics of that song are supposed to mean...
It is just nonsensical musical sing songy FUN!
Either that or it was a metaphor for consumerism and trouble in the Middle East.
One of those.
Slide your feet up the street bend your back
Shift your arm then you pull it back
Life is hard you know (oh whey oh)
So strike a pose on a Cadillac

You gotta love the hideousness of the 80s. That teased hair, those bubble skirts and neon street walker shoes...blah!
Nice. Thanks for the flashback!
Hi... Looking ways to market your blog? try this: http://bit.ly/instantvisitors
I was pretty much a hippy back then, so that goodness, I missed the big-hair phase.
What awful memories, HA!
I had a lot of fun Egyptian Style.
Secretia
I tried to forget that song and the Bangles existed! Just joking, I was a fan too. A lot of songs in the 80's were nonsensical I think, but they were FUN!
I heard the one on the radio yesterday. I'm still not sure what half the words are even after all this time
That song will forever be a classic, I just heard it on the radio about a week ago!
I gave 1986 a big fat mention on my blog today, too! (But I was not in seventh grade, dangit)
that is a great song but yes, what does it mean?
Walking like an Egyptian is a good distraction from the fact that you had no boobs yet!
I love that song and have danced to it looking foolish I'm sure many times.
I was in 6th grade in 1986 and I too LOVED that song!!
Who doesn't like that song? It's so fun to dance (badly) to!
Oh goodness! That seems like so long ago!!
I LOVED that song!!!! Thanks for the flashback!
Oh, those were the days. Everything was much simpler, even if the songs didn't make any sense.
Yay Jenni!!! This was EXACTLY the post I needed to read this morning to bring a smile to my face!
I will now have this song stuck in my head all day and I may very well be walking like an Egyptian all around LA.
:-)
Happy Holiday Season!!
I loved the 80s and I loved the Bangles! I was a wee bit older at the time, but was still flat as a board.
I heart 80s music. I know I am a little strange.
Oh 1986. I think that was about the time I discovered Poison and HAIR METAL. Yep, those were the days of good, quality music.
Ah...memories! LOL!
oh lady, if we only had a picture of you to complete this story!! lol
I always LOVED that song. Of course I wasn't even AROUND when that song was out... Just kidding. It is one of my favorites now. I wasn't really allowed to listen to secular music until I was in college. Craziness, right?
Oh, this is me,
Rebeckah at Life with Kaishon
Kaishon and Shoshi and Jonathon are making a blog and apparently they are still signed in : )
I will let you know when it is up and running so you can go voer and tell them that they are super stars! : )
Now I have that song stuck in my head. I was such an idiot in the
80's. Not that I'm wise now.....,
I'm so glad it IS just a silly song and not some satanic dark thing.
hate that.
I do think this song is a serious analysis of Middle Eastern relations and pedestrian related issues.
Ah yes, the Bangles. I never got to be Susanna because my best friend always had to be her. I had to be the guitar player. *sigh* Mine was Whitesnake...Here I Go Again.
walk, walk like an Egyptian...
I loved it too! Now this song will be stuck in my head and I will make my husband laugh by attempting the dance.
love your analysis!
