Aloha, Odor Eaters!

I have a student in my class this year who has shoes that SMELL.

It's a VERY unpleasant odor...

Like, "What on earth died in here?" bad.

I am not sure what to do besides open a window and Lysol the begeezus out of the place as often as possible.

What I'd like to do is steal those shoes and BURN them...

Aloha Questions For You:

Have you ever smelled the smell of some really RANK shoes?

Do you have any smelly shoe remedies?

Should I invest in some nose plugs?

Anyone want to take bets on how long I can hold out before I send this kid to do his work out in the hallway? Because, day-um.

Kailani's feet smell like candy and roses.

Tell your student to soak his reeky feet in vinegar and throw away his old sneakers and invest in a new pair (if he wants to get laid anytime soon).

Thats of course if he's "of age" yet. I don't know what Grade you teacher. If he is not, leave the latter part out of course.

throw out those shoes and socks immediately.
Then clean that dirty kid's body.

My Dad is a truck driver and hauls fish. He said he uses cinnamon to get the fish smell out of his trailer. I use that on my boys' shoes because they have some of the nastiest feet I've ever seen on kids. That, and I replace shoes as soon as they start to smell even a little. My 8yo thinks it's cool his shoes now smell like cookies thanks to grandpa's tip. You could put a ring of cinnamon around the kid's desk.

I do have to feel for the kid though. I had some sort of foot issue as a kid where my feet were rank, and I had to leave my shoes outside for awhile. It was something with not having enough support. I had to wear white cotton socks and breathable shoes with arch supports for a couple weeks before it went away.

As I read your post, a line from "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch" began playing in my head: "Stink. Stank. Stunk!"

Go buy some bottles of Dr Scholl's Odor destroyer powder. Then plan a lesson about bacteria & the ways it develops in damp places. Spend part of the lesson on how bacteria causes odor and use everybody's feet as an example. Which could turn into a fun yet gross foot smelling thing for a few minutes. Then say you are going to do an experiment and hey Timmy let's use your shoes this time and 2 other random kids so Timmy doesn't feel singled out, have some kids smell them, then douse with foot powder, wait 5 minutes and then have them smell them again. See! Bacteria has been destroyed, as part of a long term experiment Timmy & the others get to take the foot powder home and use it every night and in the morning everyone checks to see if the bacteria is growing or staying away. You can make a classroom chart to record bacteria growth. Have everyone write a paper on stinky shoes in their homes for extra credit

Hmmm...Baking soda can kill just about any odor, but it's kind of messy, and it would be hard to sprinkle that around without being noticed! How about lighting a really strong candle, or one of those scented oil warmers? Bath & Body Works have concentrated room sprays that come in little silver cans that are supposed to be really concentrated. I haven't tried them but know of folks who have.

Good luck!!

What grade do you teach? Maybe like someone else mentioned, you can use this as a chance to give a lesson on personal hygeine and germs, etc. I don't know how I would handle that. It would probably be uncomfortable to bring it up to the student. Maybe you could send home a generic note to all parents reminding them about having kids wear deoderant, etc. Good luck!

Ewww I have a very sensitive nose. Poor you. Is it too early to have the hygiene talk yet?

HA HA HA HA HA HA! Tell the poor boy the truth! It's better that he hears it from you and save him anymore torment he may be receiving from is peers. Call is parents, tell them the problem. Tell him you don't want him to be treated like Pig Pen from the Peanuts!

Do the kids in your class say anything about the smell? I know that I would probably talk to the school nurse to see if there is anything with the child that is causing this problem (aside from lack of cleaning). Shoes can be sprayed with Lysol and other cleaners that will kill nasty things that cause the smell. Good luck!

I also agree with Diva Ma, calling his parents would be a good idea. Let them know you are concerned that other children may start to tease him and would like to help them to ease the situation.

If the kid wipes his feet with vodka, that will absorb the smell. You could also get him drunk and have him thrown out of school.

My daughter has always had stinky feet/shoes. At some point it's not worth fighting the stink and I just pitch the shoes.

Have a great Friday!

Now that's bad when you can smell the odor without them taking off the shoes. Good Lord. Not sure how to help you since I have my own odor issue problem going on with a friend. Catch up on my blog post. Good Luck to us both.

Sadly, there is one of these types in my family. If said person would wear socks with shoes it would be so much better.

No, I have never had to deal with that. Thankfully.

Reminds me of the time one of my kids had a kid over whose feet STANK TO HIGH HEAVEN.

I MADE the kid wash his feet, I powdered them and put his shoes (actually they were sandals) in a grocery bag and threw them in the garage until he went home.

I say tell the parent -- the kid needs foot spray REGULARLY and some new shoes. You can't get that stank out.

good luck with that, my friend.

Hmmm...have any art projects coming up that could require you to accidently spill paint on his shoes?

My daughter is notorious for leaving her cleats and shin gaurds in her soccer bag...they stink! Once she took them off and left them in my car. I almost barfed when I got in the car the next day!

I'm pretty sure baking soda can cure any odor - good luck getting your classroom better smelling!

LOL that must be bad! With my sinuses I don't know how I would take it...probably ask him to sit outside the classroom LOL

I occasionally get the stanky feet. I use odor eaters spray. Makes all the difference.

I don't know what I would do in your shoes. Maybe pull him aside and mention it to him, discretely, of course.

I have smelt REALLY bad feet before from one of the girls that worked for me. She would just about clear out the office...that was the first time I had to talk to someone about their feet. LOL

My fiance has the nastiest smelling feet on the planet. If he has shoes on the smell comes up with every step he takes. If he doesn't have shoes on the floor he walks on literally stinks from his feet. I have to was the bed sheets every day and his socks stay hard as a rock even after being washed. It's not human. I told him when he dies I'm donating his feet to science.

I buy odor eater inserts for my husbands shoes and still make him keep his shoes in the garage. Poor you! such a rotten smell!

Is it the SHOE or the FOOT? Once I bought my son these stupid shoes with some weird smelling rubbery bottoms. I couldn't take it and ended up throwing them out. It was the shoe.

yuk. maybe you could tell the whole class to wash their shoes over the weekend

I have stinky feet myself. I use it as an excuse to buy more shoes. That's probably not going to work for you here, though.

A teacher told me once that she used to make her 5th graders hold up their arms as they came in from recess & she would spray them all w/ deodorant. Cracked me up!

I totally feel for you. My son has the feet of a skunk. He left his cleats in my van once. That was a truly disgusting experience!

I've had to tell passengers to put their shoes back on because their feet just stunk up the plane!

Oh no!

I used to have to buy these things at CVS for my office when the students were a tad malodorous...

They are gels and they have a lid and look like a little can of cat food. Try it. You will love it : ) Position it right near stinky feets desk!
