Aloha Goonch Day!

My husband was watching some horrible show about gigantic freshwater fish that eat people last night. The name of the show is Flesh Eating River Monsters.

Basically, there is a freaky huge catfish called The Goonch that lives in rivers and eats people in India BECAUSE they burn their dead people on funeral pyres and then float them on down the river.

The Goonch EAT the remains of the people and now these fish pretty much think:

people = food

I am so totally creeped out by this whole thing, I can't even tell you...

But I can assure you there WILL be some nightmares.

Oh! Here is a delightful picture of The Goonch for you, because why should I be the only one to suffer?

Holy CRAP, right?

So my Aloha Goonch Day Questions for you this week are:

Did you KNOW about this? That there are fish that live in fresh water that will EAT you?

What are the odds that I am NOT going to think of The Goonch every time I swim in fresh water for all the rest of my days on earth?

Doesn't The Goonch sort of sound like the nickname for the guy in highschool who can burp the alphabet and fart on command?

And!

Do you think maybe the people in India should consider NOT floating barbequed dead people down the river anymore?

For more Aloha and less scary fish....

Thank you for ruining my life from now on, with this information.

ok fish freak me out a little to begin with. THIS is horrifying! this is exactly why i don't go in any water that's not a pool or jacuzzi!

i dont think they should necessarily change their customs. i think we should just destroy the goonch!!

blech what an ugly creature. I'm a pool swimmer for sure. I grew up by the ocean but it freaks me out now and any water where you can get eaten is out as well so I think I'll just stay in my lounge chair with my big wide brimmed hat and read a book!

That's all.

To answer your questions, Zero, yes, and yes. Thanks for the mental image. We're taking the kids to Lake Erie later today.

Didn't Ron Howard make a holiday documentary about that pointy-sticks-outta-face creature: How the Groonch Stole Christmas? Something like that, I believe. Actually, that nasty mug reminds me of the bullheads (pre-fry pan, that is) that my Grandma use to catch, then sizzle us up for supper. They "et" better than they looked, but no human lives were ever lost as I recall. LOL!

Yikes! I am not sure I will ever be able to swim in a freshwater lake/river again! That has nightmare written all over it!

I was flippin' through the channels and I saw that show. There is a weird one on NG where they travel all around the world and eat wacky stuff that I on't mention because I love my pets very much. Thank goodness for grocery stores....

I love that show! The host is just so serious about it. He seems as disturbed by the whole thing as we do sitting at home on the couch.

The only fresh water I will swim in is highly chlorinated.

This is why I don't swim in water I can't see through. Back in Kansas when I was growing up, catfish fishing was pretty big (probably still is). One summer my sister's boyfriend caught one that was 60 pounds. He had it at his house in the bathtub. It filled up the tub and its mouth was as big as a freaking dinner plate. He caught it in the private lake we had a cabin on. I never swam there again.

That's really scary

I saw that show...pretty scary!

Thanks for the freaking Goonch nightmare!!! Why oh why do they float their BBQ'd dead down the river?? I'm imaging this is also the river THEY bathe in and drink from etc etc.

Keeping my fingers crossed that there aren't any Goonches in my part of the world.......although ((tapping my brain)) that may be the key to keeping those kids in the "safe zone" at the beach. "Stay over here kids or the Goonch will get you!" Now there's an idea. Have a great Friday!!

JamericanSpice said...

I didn't know about that, but every culture has it's rituals so they probably wont stop.

However I'm kinda glad I don't um go to rivers ...anymore...well now I guess I'm ruined!

Mocha Dad said...

Goonch looks tasty. I like to eat any animal that would eat me.

ComfyMom~Stacey said...

That looks like an overgrown catfish. Catfish eat meat. I've seen them swarm over hot dogs like piranha.

TheAngelForever said...

No, I had never specifically heard of them. Honestly, I am a pool person. Do not really like dealing with sand and/or dead fish (forget the meat eating ones) that are in the water.

Kori said...

I didn't know that particular bit of trivia, but I am not particularly grossed out; I live in Idaho. We swim in the river. It is cloudy and murky, which is generally all the better for swimming in because if you don't SEE the things lurking around, you can blissfully deny anything might be there. But that's just me; denial = Happiness. :)

Hey, fish gotta eat, too. I say, YIKES, but whatever.

I had no idea. I'm glad I am a swimming pool girl :)

I thought you were talking about some horror movie, I had no idea a fish eating people is real! I'll be sticking to swimming in chlorine filled swimming pools!

Baba said...

Fish like this live everywhere. They are basically a sucker fish or carp and are bottom feeders. They eat trash or dead flesh. They will feed on dead fish or dead people. It's nothing new. If they aren't caught in the lifetime, they can grow quite large.

Mrsbear said...

My daughter was dying to see that show, we must have missed it. The Goonch looks like one scary mofo. Kind of looks like some weirdo catfish. He might it me, but if I catch him first he's dinner. ;)

Jaime said...

I missed you and your crazy blog! My url is different now so your old follow won't work anymore. You'll have to re-follow. I gotta have my Jenni! I don't see your widget but I just followed through the top bar thingie.

Girl, I can one-up you on that. Hubby's actually applied for a job in India! Yeah, we might actually living with the Goonches. I swear, I did not know about this when he applied. You're blog has totally been a public service for me!

Otter Thomas said...

This thing has freaked me out too. I love to fish. I have caught many a catfish, but the thought of the gooch will always be in my mind when I catch another.

Noob Mommy said...

I love that name! The Goonch. Hafta name a future pet the Goonch. Have you seen a monkfish? That is disturbing...but oh so tasty when cooked just-so. Please look for a monkfish photo...and while you're at it...a potato bug. This one was waiting for me in front of my classroom one year and I literally screamed for the custodian from a mile away.

Heatherlyn said...

I loved the picture of the fish. I had no idea. But ... it makes sense. What else would the fish think? Duh.

And setting dead people afloat in a river that people swim and fish in? BAD IDEA. Makes me glad that I live in America and India is NOT on my list of places to visit. ever.
